At the time I wrote I Could Always Come Home, I hadn’t worked on the West Coast of Tasmania — I simply went there for quiet introspection and a sense of freedom. Its rugged beauty gave me space to breathe and reflect.
For years, Alistair and I managed motels and caravan parks all over Australia. Through all the moving, I carried a strong need to have a place that truly felt like home. Alistair didn’t worry about it as much, but for me, home was something I held close. My mother’s house had always been that place, and when she passed away, I felt the weight of needing to find a new anchor.
Driving the winding roads through Tullah and Rosebery, the landscape stirred the lyrics that became the heart of the song — a reminder that even in times of change, there is always a place you can return to.
